The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum pays tribute to the important intellectual, author, thinker, philosopher, politician and traveller Nikos Kazantzakis.

The Museum is made up of a cluster of buildings in the central square of the historical village of Varvari, now known as Myrtia. The Museum Exhibition is housed on a site formerly occupied by the home of the Anemoyiannis family, which was related to Nikos Kazantzakis' father, Kapetan Michalis.

The Museum was founded by set and costume designer Yiorgos Anemoyiannis, a pioneering figure in Greek theatre. His fundamental aim was to preserve the author's memory and promote his work and thought. Significant assistance was offered by Eleni Kazantzaki, the author's second wife, and her adopted son Patroclos Stavrou.

The Museum holds manuscripts and notes by the author; samples of his correspondence with major thinkers, politicians and authors of his time; first editions of his works in Greek and other languages; rare photographic material; souvenirs from his travels; personal effects; models, costumes and other material from theatre productions of his works in Greece and abroad; portraits and sculptures of the author; dozens of foreign-language editions of his works from all over the world, all a legacy that brings alive the memory of Nikos Kazatzakis and promotes his work and personality.

The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum has quite literally become a site of worldwide intellectual pilgrimage. Every day, visitors arrive from all four corners of the globe, bearing witness to the lasting relevancy of the word expressed by the great Cretan, universal author and thinker.

Re:C.I.C Excursion with Rethymno group 6 Months, 4 Weeks ago
The excursion for Februari will go in the mountains. We visit first Monastery Arkadi, symbol of the Cretan Resistance during the Turkish Occupation. Than the pottery village Margarites where we can see how they still work with their ancient traditions of making ceramics. Next is on the highest road of Crete to the Sfentoni caves of Zoniana and we move on to nearby well known vilage Anogia to meet the ladies that produce carpets and beautiful embroidery.
The Lunch is at 910 meter in a taverna in front of the ideon caves. Here we meet also Vasili Skoulas that will sing of his Cretan songs for us.
The benefits from the excursion will go to the Red Cross Samaritans that will collect enough money this year to buy a new 4wheel drive jeep to make assistance possible in mountainious areas. So the excursion is very related to the charity that we have chosen. We start from Georgioupoli and can pick up any person up to Panormos.

C.I.C. Coach excursion to Eastern Crete Sunday 28-3-2010
Kritsa Panagia Church & traditional Village-Agios Nikolaos- Elounda- Spinalonga- Plaka.

We start at around 8.00 am from Georgioupolis main square.
We pick up guest from Georgioupolis-Kavros-Rethymno-Misseria-Platanes-Adele-Skaletta-Panormos-Agia Pelagia, but always from the Highway.

Today we start a little earlier with our monthly excursion which is already “a hit” within our C.I.C activities. We will explore the east of Crete and although many of us live here for many years, maybe this part of our island is still a secret to you. We will be under the care of the most famous guide on Crete which is www.victorzorbas.com He designed this program and will bring us first of all to the Panagia church at Kritsa. This is a 3 aisle church with wall paintings of 13th century. We visit the traditional village Kritsa, where former Greek minister, but also Moviestar Melina Mercouri and her husband/director Jules Dasin filmed “the Miracle of Kritsa”. From Kritsa we pass on to Agios Nikolaos and make a photo stop above the city. Its 15 minutes from here to come to the most luxurious beach resort on Crete, Elounda. Here ministers, celebrities, famous sports people come for their holidays and it all started with the great English statesmen Winston Churchill who had a house in the village. From Elounda we will take a boat to the island Spinalonga that we visit and we hear all the stories from Victor. He wrote 2 books about the island and the area and we all know the story about this former Lepra island from the BBC TV series “Who pays the ferrymen? ” The lunch will be in the traditional village Plaka and after this we return to our pick up stations.
Because this excursion is a bit further away the cost of the coach is higher, we do not increase the ticket price, but we need a minimum of 25 people. We will have this number because it’s a week before Easter and we can invite our friends to come.
For the Benefits of this coach trip the group of CIC Rethymno will vote on the coffee morning at La bamba on 4-3-2010

Price: 15,00 euro p.p. for members of the C.I.C and 17,50 for non members. Participation can be made by email. This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or by phone 28310-56641 Tickets can also be obtained at the coffee morning of 4-3-2010 in the La Bamba bar.
